FRIDAY REVIEW: SETHUPATHY

FRIDAY REVIEW: SETHUPATHY : A Tamizh commercial cop story from director S.U Arun Kumar. Starring Vijay Sethupathy, Remya Nambeesan and many others, the movie is straight from the books of cliched police story where the protagonist fights with just one baddie and its all about that.

PLUS: Vijay Sethupathy jumps into mass hero shoes for the first time and has donned it pretty good. On one side he plays the toughie cop and the other side a perfect husband to Remya Nambeesan and better dad to both kids. It is also Nivas Prasanna's(music director) first mass movie and the combo has worked big time. "Naan Yaaru" in Anirudh's voice keeps reverberating at many places. The BGM is a gethu factor and a major plus of second half. Vaathiyar role(baddie) played by Vela Ramamoorthy shares equal mass moments. There are many commercial power scenes to clap and hoot around.

MINUS: Though the run-time is a little under two hours, the screenplay drags it too long . There is nothing new done to the many times tested plot of Tamizh cinema.

VERDICT: An enjoyable mass commercial and a good start for Vijay Sethupathy.

RATED: 2.5/5

FRIDAY REVIEW - MIRUTHAN

FRIDAY REVIEW: MIRUTHAN - Tamil Cinema's first ZOMBIE movie from the director of "NAAIGAL JAAKIRATHAI",Shakthi Sounder Rajan.

CAST & PLOT:
Starring Jeyam Ravi, Lakshmi Menon , Baby Anikha and Kaali Venkat in main roles, MIRUTHAN is a straight delivery from the many ZOMBIE movies that you could recollect. But forgetting Hollywood , be it the audience who are to yet to have the zombie experience or movie buffs like me who have always loved to watch Kollywood faces in these type of movies, MIRUTHAN is an exciting experience.

PLUS: Kudos first to director for the subject chosen. Ravi shines through the role , a tailor made script for him. From Peraanmai days, his weapon handling skills are good to watch. Kaali Venkat keeps the humour moving till climax with his timing liners. Lakshmi Menon shares the love track as the doctor and baby anikha shares the sister track. HORRIFYING ZOMBIES theme is still running through my mind: A classy BGM by Imman. Couldn believe Imman could bring in such class BGM. On similar lines is MUNNAL KAADHALI which will be on repeat mode for some days is good on screen and ears. Applause to the VFX team for a good work done. Definite mention is the INTERVAL frame shot where the entire audience broke to claps.

Though many reviews state that the love and sister sentiment tracks are unnecessary in a zombie plot. But i definitely feel it as the difference or the special element which is always delight to watch.

MINUS: After the high paced half, the second half drops a bit but not complain-able.  And it was becoming an over dosage of ONE MAN SHOW of Ravi towards the climax.

VERDICT: A bold attempt.

PODA PODI

FRIDAY REVIEW- PODA PODI-Osthi Velan is back into commercial network but taking a romantic route from his MASS OSTHI. Poda Podi is a debut film for director Vignesh with music by Dharan . It also marks the debut of Varalakshmi Sarathkumar- Daughter of ace actor Sarathkumar.Poda Podi is a narrative description of Arjun( STR @ Simbu) and Nisha(Varalakshmi) who takes us through seven stages of their love cum marriage life. It starts with the famous number of "Love Panlaama venaama" .

Arjun is a happy go guy who works in Animations and lives with his uncle (VTV Ganesh). Nisha, on the other side lives with her guardian (Shobana) and has a sole aim to win the UK's top dance show "LETS DANCE"... Arjun first meets Nisha at a pub in London and they start dating with the song background of "poda podi ..kaathalai kaathalikiren" . Arjun deliberately asks Nisha out at her dance practice timings so that she skips the practice. It goes on till a day when she goes to practice lying to him and it unluckily falls on his birthday. It follows up with a breakup and patchup scenario and finally she proposes and she accepts and they get married. Life moves on with a agreement that every second day will be a choice of theirs. If the first day go as per Arjun's wishes ,then the next day will be Nisha's. Arjun's uncle gives him a idea that nisha will always be at home if they have a baby. They soon have a baby and indeed makes the couple very happy.

Post-Interval, the audiences are taken into another break-up with finally Arjun himself pairing up with Nisha for "Lets Dance". Does this idea work out or not ? This has to be watched on screens. Simbu's dialogue Delivery is the greatest plus point of the movie and his acting skills are highly improving on a increasing slope. Presence of VTV ganesh's voice surely adds laughter to the plot. Varalakshmi Sarathkumar does have certain places to prove her acting skills and she does it right. Shobana does not have a great role to mention with.

Music is the Next plus point. Every other number suits the movie perfectly. Three songs need special mention. First will be "Love Panlaama Venaa" . Not that it has been a viral hit even before the audio launch. but it will be a treat for simbu fans as we can get to see previous characters of simbu in costumes of Vallavan, Osthi, VTV and Manmadhan .Also added will be the presence of Santhanam and Premgi in that song. Secondly comes " I am a Kuthu Dancer" . This again is a treat for Simbu fans as we get to see the famous simbu moves of "En Aasai Mythiliye".."DanDanakka".."Loosu Penne"... and "Yemmadi Aathadi" in it.

Lastly, "Appan Mavane Vaa da "is a song to a son from his father with beautifully penned lyrics and for the first time shot in DISNEYLAND for a tamil movie. PODA PODI is surely a youth entertainer and a 120 minutes of stress free colourful ride. Rated 2.5/5

Pizza - Hot and thrilling Delivery

FRIDAY REVIEW- PIZZA- Karthik Subbaraj lands into the Bigger cinema ,  thanks to Kalaignar Tv's "NAALAYA IYAKKUNAR" . After making several short films, PIZZA forms the first full length Thriller movie from Karthik. The title aptly suits the film as it moves around a Pizza Delivery Boy.

Michael is working in a restaurant as a pizza delivery boy. He lives in together with his child hood friend Uma, a story writer who has special interest for the thriller ones. The movie starts with the daily deliveries of Michael and later at home, he comes to know that Uma is pregnant. At first , he is not ready to accept but after a lot of thoughts and a round of booze with his restaurant mates (Tamil : " Sarakku adichha thaan sila vishyangaluku solution kidaikum"), he decides to move on and get married.

Like any other day , Michael receives a delivery order for Anna Nagar . He delivers it and while he asks for the bill payment, he is made to wait by Smitha (lady who lives in that bungalow). Suddenly the power goes off and Smitha goes upstairs for the change,  and here starts the thriller ride . Delayed length of silence and sudden sounds make Michael go upstairs but only to find Smitha dead, nailed to the wall. Horrified by the incidents , he runs for his life and is stuck indoors as the doors are jammed. Post Interval, a series of killings follow  and why it is happening ? Is it really a ghost or a human killing ? These will be answered only at the theatres. Any more revealing would do injustice to the horror script.

Performance wise, Camera and sound department gets the first claps even before the casting. Cinematography at night is really a tough task and if the supporting thrill music goes well, it makes the perfect masala and it works out well for the director. Next,  to the casting department, Vijay Sethupathi (of Thenmerku paruva kaatru fame) is the main lead and his acting skills comes out good when he is stuck at the bungalow. Ramya (of Kulla nari kootam) gives him good lead from the female side. Other characters for the supporting roles jump out straight from any low budget cast list , including Naalaya iyakkunar sets.

Overall Pizza is served with the perfect combination of toppings to the customer needs and necessarily is delivered hot . Go for the new genre of tamil cinema and you surely will enjoy this dish.. RATED 3.5/5

Barfi - Review

FRIDAY REVIEW - BARFI: One Film a Year and make sure it hits the BULL’s EYE in both terms , Collection as well as Audience liking…. Looks like Ranbir Kapoor is making this as his theme line…. The National award winner for ROCKSTAR is back again with another scintillating performance … But taking an exact opposite route where he has no scope to shout or yell at (ROCKSTAR). ..A character who is technically mute and hearing impaired.

He plays the title role (BARFI) , a fun loving guy who believes in “ live every moment happily”… Like any other story , enters a rich engaged girl Shruti (played by Telugu star ILEANA), who falls for the mimics and subtle nature of Barfi  . But practicality strikes where she is forced to choose material comforts over him and go with the riches .. The screen does not lack the female content as enters a new character, Jil-Mil (Priyanka chopra ), who due to her autism disorder is neglected by her parents but seeks her happiness in Barfi's life. The story moves on as we see barfi's father needing money for kidney operation for which Barfi plans to kidnap jilmil and demand for ransom. Twists come into the plot when she is really kidnapped by someone.... Who kidnaps jilmil?... Does Shruti comeback for Barfi? ..Will Barfi be able to find love in Jilmil?.... You need to hit the theatres for these answers....

Love has no language barrier... Same goes for the movie too ....Even those who do not understand hindi can go for BARFI as 70% percent of movie goes on Background score....That does not mean the pace is slow... Ranbir's Charlie chaplin act keeps you engaged through out... The story moves between 1972 1978 and present in Shruti's narration and keeps audience to think about at certain places... Applause to director Anurag basu who has not restricted the movie only to sympathy mood.... One will get all moments of cinema in it..

Coming to the Lead characters, Ranbir is making a habit to make a run for National award as he does a Charlie-Chaplin cum Mr.Bean . He lives the character and mixes his expressions for every other second. He seriously has put in a great effort to dwell in the BARFI role... If this was one side, Anyone would seriously argue with priyanka's role which is equally best.. The lower lip closed, and ever deviating eyes with costumes matching to it , Priyanka does not seem like a thirty plus old... The scenes where only Ranbir and Priyanka are found , The movie moves in just music...with no dialogues... just the love between the lead pair....which is fresh as a new born baby....pure affection which surely makes every audience to enjoy .

Ileana , a bollywood debutee, (though a lead southern star),  carries over the role of a bengali wife who still cannot forget her love. The narration where she accepts as well as rejects barfi's affection for Jilmil due to  her love over barfi requires mention here.... The music plays the silent hero in BARFI as it is the only vocal at most of the places....

In total, Barfi makes it a must for all to come to Theatre and enjoy the music filled ride ...Ranbir and Priyanka will take you through a ride of 2.5 hours which will live in your minds for long... RATED 4.5/5

Va Quarter Cutting

The second venture for Pushkar-Gayathri duo after their first hit "ORAM PO". . Shiva(SUNDARAJAN..shortly SURA) masking on his success as hero in TAMIL PADAM tries his hand being a coimbatore lad, a vijay fan who is on his way to saudi arabia. . he finds out that drinks are a restriction in saudi. . so his last wish before boarding is to have a QUARTER CUTTING. . and his search for Quarter forms the rest of the plot. .

SPB charan(MARTHANDAM) is sura's sister's lover and helps sura in his one night dream . .and the third character is saro (Lekha) who is a suicide attempt case for 12th failure. . and the plot moves further. .

The other characters who fix themselves are Kalyan master , john vijay and abhinayshree. . The story hasn got much to offer. . The plot moves along line the characters with ultra old dialogues (mokkais) and without any pace in it. . The twists and tales are predictable and positioned at wrong places. . The language accent of John vijay adds as an plus point at places. .

but one thing that stands out is NIRAV SHAH's cinematography and G.V.PRAKASH's music. . "THEDIYE" and "QUARTER" songs are sure to break into chartbuster's list and high praises to nirav for bringing the entire chennai's nght life with spectacular camera work. . The director tried out comedy in oram po which worked out well. . but he didn get second time lucky. .

May be subtle mokkais arent the only way to make people laugh. . .RATED 1/5

SIRUTHAI FOR KARTHI, VENGAI FOR DHANUSH

What with the Hari-directed Singam proving to be a runaway success, naming movies after predators seem to have become a fad among our directors. A similarly titled Siruthai is under production with Karthi and Tamannah in the lead, directed by Siva.

Likewise, Hari’s next film is also tentatively titled Vengai. Dhanush seems to have nodded his consent for Vengai. His Uthama Puthiran is ready for release and he has completed his portions for Aadukalam as well. Talks are reportedly on with Tamannah to play Dhanush’s lead in the movie.
